BioCopper1® vs. Copper 2: Why the form of copper you take changes everything.
Not all copper supplements are created equal, and the difference isn't small. Most people supplementing with copper today are getting a form their cells can't effectively use. Here's why the valency of copper determines everything from your energy levels to your long-term brain health.

Not All Copper Is the Same. The Form Is Everything
Copper exists in three distinct states. Only one of them is bioavailable, meaning only one can actually enter your cells and support the biological processes copper is responsible for.
Elemental Copper
29 electrons / 29 protons
Solid Copper, such as a penny, pipe or nugget.
Copper 1 (Cuprous) - This is BioCopper1®
28 electrons / 29 protons
Why this matters
Half oxidized, and properly chelated, this copper is bioavailable to your body and essential for cellular health.
Copper 2 (Cupric) - The form in all other supplements
27 electrons / 29 protons
Why this matters
Fully oxidized, this copper is non-bioavailable. Because Copper 2 is not absorbed when it enters the body, it accumulates in the extracellular matrix. This is the copper in ALL other supplement brands.

Every cell in your body runs on ATP. Copper 1 helps make it.
ATP, adenosine triphosphate, is the molecule your cells use to power every biological function. From the beat of your heart to the firing of a neuron, it all runs on ATP. And ATP production, at the mitochondrial level, requires copper, specifically Cu1.
Plain English
ATP Powers Everything
ATP is the energy currency of every cell - required for active transport of nutrients in, waste out, and every energy-demanding process your body performs continuously.
Cu1: The Final Spark for Cellular Energy
The Electron Transport Chain is the final stage of cellular respiration—the process your mitochondria use to create ATP energy. This crucial stage generates 34 ATP molecules, accounting for roughly 90% of all ATP produced from a single cycle (up to 38 ATP total).
Copper (Cu1) is an essential cofactor at Complex IV, the ultimate step in this pathway. Without copper, the chain cannot complete. With it, your mitochondria can complete the full cycle and keep cellular energy production running at peak capacity.
Cu2 Cannot Substitute for Cu1
This distinction is critical: Cu2 cannot replace Cu1 in cellular energy production.
To enter the mitochondria, copper must be in the cuprous (+1) state so it can donate an electron. Cu2 (cupric copper) lacks this extra electron to donate. While the body can reduce some Cu2 down to Cu1 internally, this conversion process is inefficient and limited.
Because the Electron Transport Chain relies strictly on the unique electrochemical properties of Cu1, supplementing with high doses of Cu2 cannot compensate for a lack of bioavailable Cu1. MitoSynergy is the only company providing direct Cu1 copper in supplement form to meet this exact requirement.
Copper's role goes well beyond energy.
Copper is an essential trace mineral involved in more than 50 enzymatic reactions throughout the body. Energy production is the headline - but it's far from the only system that depends on it.

Copper's deficiency warning signs.
Suboptimal copper status is more common than most people think - and harder to detect than a blood test alone can reveal.
Common signs include
Chronic fatigue or low energy
Premature gray hair
Brain fog or poor focus
Joint discomfort or stiffness
Poor wound healing
Low iron despite adequate intake
Deficiency Is More Common and Harder to Detect Than Most People Know.
The assumption that dietary copper is sufficient and that Cu2 supplements fill any gap, misses the fundamental issue of valency and absorption. You can have high serum copper levels and still be functionally deficient in Cu1 at the cellular level.
Here's why: standard blood tests measure total copper, but they cannot distinguish between Cu1 and Cu2. If you've been supplementing with Cu2, your total copper levels may appear elevated, while your cells remain starved of the Cu1 they need to function. You can be copper-toxic and copper-deficient at the same time. The excess Cu2 circulates in the bloodstream, unable to integrate into the cellular processes copper is responsible for, while your mitochondria and follicles operate without the Cu1 they require.
Research has also shown that suboptimal copper status, even without clinical deficiency, can result in decreased microglial activation and impaired immunological defense, contributing to neurological decline over time.
Who's Most at Risk
Three groups most likely to benefit from Cu1 supplementation:
Adults over 40
Copper absorption efficiency declines with age. Most people over 40 have unknowingly been getting a form of copper their aging cells absorb less efficiently.
Primarily processed-food diets
Cu1 is found in whole food sources. Processing significantly reduces Cu1 content. Those eating mostly processed food receive minimal bioavailable copper from diet.
High-dose zinc supplementers
Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption pathways. High-dose zinc supplementation can functionally deplete copper over time.
What Your Body Actually Does With the Copper You Ingest.
Testing has shown that Cu1 dominates in nearly all food samples excluding cocoa and tap water. Cu1 is primarily supplied from whole food sources, the same type found in MitoSynergy products.

This is not a disease claim. The research on copper valency and long-term brain health reinforces a broader principle: the form of copper your body is exposed to, not just the amount, determines whether copper supports cellular function or burdens it. BioCopper1® was developed specifically to ensure the copper you take every day is in the form your cells are designed to use.
What the Research on Long-Term Cu2 Exposure shows
George Brewer, Emeritus Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan, spent decades studying the relationship between copper valency and cognitive health. His research and subsequent work building on it, points to a consistent finding: the form of copper the brain is exposed to matters significantly for long-term neurological function.
Studies in animal models demonstrated that divalent drinking water copper (Cu2) significantly increased the formation of amyloid-beta, the misfolded protein associated with Alzheimer's disease. Animals receiving only Cu1 did not show the same accumulation patterns.
The proposed mechanism: Cu2 cannot be processed by the liver with normal copper metabolism pathways. It passes to the blood and unlike Cu1, which is integrated into copper-dependent biological processes, Cu2 interferes with the clearance of amyloid-beta, contributing to its accumulation over time.
Long-Term Exposure Matters as Much as Daily Dose.
The preponderance of Cu found in processed food is in the Cu2 form. And the systemic effects of chronic Cu2 exposure, versus Cu1, are not equivalent. Research on microglial biology helps illustrate why.
Studies examining the differential effects of Cu1 and Cu2 on microglia, the brain's immune cells, have found that Cu2 drives microglia toward degenerative phenotypes associated with neuroinflammation and accelerated cognitive decline. The cuprous Cu1 form, by contrast, maintained homeostatic microglial phenotypes and demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, supporting healthy phagocytosis of amyloid-beta rather than impairing it.
A Note on High-Dose Cu2 Supplementation
Some communities advocate taking very high doses of Cu2 copper, sometimes up to 40mg per day, in pursuit of the benefits associated with copper. Here's the biological reality: at high enough doses, a small fraction of Cu2 gets converted to Cu1 in the body, which is why some people report feeling effects. But the remainder circulates as Cu2, which the liver cannot integrate into normal copper metabolism. Over time, this Cu2 accumulates, with potential neurological and cardiovascular consequences that may not be apparent for years or decades.
The answer is not more Cu2. It's the right form of copper at a clinically meaningful dose.
Excess Dysregulated Cu2 May Promote Oxidative Stress Across Multiple Systems.
Effects on Microglia
Chronic Cu2 exposure has been shown to directly accelerate degenerative expression signatures in microglial cells, the brain's primary immune defense. Cu2 drives microglia toward the degenerative phenotypes associated with neurodegeneration, contributing to accelerated cognitive decline.
Oxidative Stress
Cu2 from tap water or standard supplements causes oxidative stress, essentially rusting your cells. Excess Cu2 triggers damaging superoxide free radicals, which activate brain cells called glia. This sparks a vicious cycle of ongoing brain inflammation and cell damage. In short, Cu2 doesn't boost your energy—it actively fuels systemic inflammation.
Cardiovascular Implications
Accumulating free Cu2 in vivo drives oxidative damage in blood vessels. Consequently, the specific chemical form of copper in long-term supplements may pose cardiovascular risks alongside its known neurological effects.
What to look for on a supplement label
Three things to check before taking any copper supplement.
The form of copper listed. Colloidal copper, copper sulfate, copper gluconate, copper glycinate, copper bisglycinate = Cu2. "Cunermuspir" or BioCopper1® = Cu1. MitoSynergy is the only brand using Cu1.
The dose in context. A high Cu2 dose is not equivalent to a lower Cu1 dose. The form determines bioavailability, the number alone tells you nothing meaningful.
Whether the manufacturer discloses valency at all. If a brand can't tell you whether their copper is Cu1 or Cu2, assume it's Cu2. Brands that understand the distinction say so.

The form of copper matters more than the amount. Nearly every copper supplement on the market uses Cu2, the fully oxidized form. Cu2 is poorly absorbed at the cellular level and cannot effectively activate the biological pathways that copper is responsible for. BioCopper1® delivers Cu1, the half-reduced, bioavailable form your cells are designed to use. It's the only commercially available Cu1 supplement. That's not a marketing claim, it's a chemistry distinction with measurable biological consequences.
Most customers notice a reduction in shedding by week three, Lustriva® begins supporting the active growth cycle in this window. Visible thickness changes typically emerge around month two. For gray hair specifically, new growth often comes in noticeably different between months 4-6. The full protocol is six months. Hair biology moves on its own timeline, the results that last are built at the follicle level, not overnight.
We recommend choosing one or the other based on your primary goal. Because Grow + Restore Cu1 already contains a potent, higher dose of BioCopper1® for hair and pigment, adding MitoActivator MAX is unnecessary. If your focus is on hair growth and restoring natural color, Grow + Restore Cu1 is the right choice. If you are looking for foundational mitochondrial support and general healthy aging, MitoActivator MAX is for you.
Note: Whichever you choose, take your BioCopper1® at least two hours before or after any high-dose zinc, as these minerals compete for the same absorption pathways.
Yes and the reason is the form. BioCopper1® delivers Cu1 (cuprous) copper, not Cu2 (cupric). Cu1 is the form the body's copper homeostasis system is designed to absorb, regulate, and use. The accumulation and toxicity concerns associated with high-dose copper supplementation are linked to Cu2, the oxidized form found in every other copper supplement. MitoSynergy has been formulating with BioCopper1® since 2012, with NDI approval and third-party testing on every batch.
Nutrafol and Divi are solid choices for targeting thinning, but they only solve half the equation. While they focus on growth cycles and stress-related shedding, they completely overlook pigmentation.
Grow + Restore Cu1 provides the same high-level support for growth—including DHT inhibition and cortisol reduction—but adds a critical second layer: pigment maintenance. With 10mg of BioCopper1®, it is the only formula that supports the pigment pathway and activates tyrosinase to address graying at the same time it fuels new growth. It’s not just a growth supplement; it’s a total hair restoration system.
